Boy, have I got something special for you, my little english muffins.  Something specialer than a baby mouse singing Christmas carols.  Katherine (aka Miss Pompadour) is giving away a stone and crochet necklace — the very stunning necklace you see above — but it’s not just ANY necklace.  Katherine designed this unique piece specifically for Westervin!  Now isn’t that somethin’?  The three stones are Sodalite, which are said to bring inner peace and harmony and help with communication.  Katherine also used a sparkly silver thread and included a silver lobster claw closure.  With all these special touches, this necklace is a $60 value.  Well, what are you waiting for?  Enter away!  Oh, you’re waiting for the interview aren’t you…

First of all, how did you spend this past weekend?
This Saturday my boyfriend Josh and I went to my family’s property/garden, which is about an hour away from where I live. We covered the blackcurrant bushes with a net, so the birds wouldn’t pick at them when they got juicy. Sunday was a hiking day, deep in the woods, where we met a lovely dog who became a companion for our journey, there and back. He led the way; he would scout the area and then come back to check in with us. He didn’t seem like a stray, probably just got lost, so after the hike we made sure to get him to a shelter.

When and why did you decide to start selling your creations?
I started selling my artwork on Etsy in early 2008, but I have been really involved with local galleries and art centers. I did have a piece in a silent auction this year — that was very exciting. The senator of New York State was there, so I guess it was a big deal, but all I cared about was that my piece was sold.

You also make some beautiful paintings!  They’re a complex amalgamation of colors, patterns and textures.  Can you tell me a little about your process?
Oh, boy — my studio is the floor between my sister’s bed and my bed. I know … it’s sad, but I am planing on moving out, sometime. That definitely has affected my artwork in terms of size, but I do try to make the best of it. My inspiration comes from nature, jewelry and fashion designs. I love things that have texture, anything that screams to be touched. Anything that’s complicated, intricate, intertwined and has pattern on it. Printmaking and textiles really fascinate me, so I end up using so many different materials to create that texture and the illusion of it being almost like fabric.

I also see a lot of nature in your work and on your blog– where do you live, and does that influence your art?
My favorite color is green and nature has lots of it, so I tend to come back to it, not only to refresh my art but my mind as well. I live in Hyde Park, NY, in the Hudson Valley which is basically a big national park – home of F.D.Roosevelt. It’s expensive to live here but gorgeous in the fall. I hear the best apples are from the Hudson Valley as well. There is a place I go to every fall called Gigi’s, they use local food and make the best pear pizza!

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?
I love cats, but I’d say an elephant because they can paint! Plus they are loyal and have a great memory.

Have you won any giveaways lately?
Yes I did! I won a paper collage from Essimar on Post Grad Hair Cut. It was a big surprise, thank you Sam! It was my first win from a blog — that was really neat. I have it standing on my dresser, so I see it everyday!

It’s finally starting to feel summery — what are your top five favorite ways to beat the heat?
I don’t know if I have top five, but ice cream, riding on the back of my boyfriend’s Harley while taking pictures, and swimming alone in a pool while it was raining was very refreshing once.

Do you have any new designs in store for Miss Pompadour?
I will be getting more stones and different strings — gold is on my mind now. Also, I want to crochet some arrow heads made out of volcanic ash, and I bought some handmade paper beads. I will be exploring all summer :)
