Happy Birthday, Westervin!

{ one hundred thirty three by Hannah Greene }

The Westervin blog is one year old! Can you believe it? We gave birth to this little idea of a silly blog around this time last year, and my how our little creation has grown in 12 months! My how our lives have changed in 12 months! An engagement, a new job, a new apartment, and our crazy kitty child, Fitzgerald. Happy as clams, we are.

How will we celebrate? Chocolate cake, of course! Lots of chocolate cake. And a little trip to see our bestest best friends in the whole universe. And probably some champagne, if I have anything to say about it. But don’t worry–we haven’t forgotten about you, our faithful reader. We probably wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you, all of you, with your sweet comments and encouraging feedback. We’ve even got a little present for you. You’ll have to wait until Monday, though. But I’ll give you a hint… it rhymes with Clog Piveaway.

Out & About

Out & About: A Long Weekend

Sarah and I have been on the road since Wednesday, visiting family in Missouri and Arkansas. “Why should I care?” you say. Well, because we also happened upon some pretty cool stuff in between spending time with the family.

We took many a photo during our extra-long excursion, but I think the one above sums up the entire trip. There were good times. There were bad times. There were old-timey times (at the Fort Smith History Museum! where this photo was taken). There was enough food to send one into a self-induced coma and enough family drama to make one want a little somethin’ to take the edge off. Not that one partakes in such degenerate deeds… unless said deeds include Monster Margaritas, which were, by the way, partaken of.

We’ll both be posting more details of our adventures as the week goes on. In the meantime, you can see a few more pictures from our southern sightseeing on our Flickr photostream.

Awww… you guys <3!

If a blog shouts into the ether, but there’s no one there to read it… does it even matter? No! Which is why we’re so grateful you’re here. Thank you for finding Westervin even remotely interesting. Have a happy Thanksgiving (if you’re into that sort of thing), and let’s hang out again next week.

Needle Drop: Song Off

In honor of the recent mid-term elections, Westervin is hosting (read: making up) an election of our own. But rather than political power, we’re asking you to vote for soul power in our first ever song off! Boy howdy do we have a big choice for everyone today, between the passionate vocal stylings of Wilson Pickett and the power of Otis Redding. Pick your favorite and let us know in the comments. Come on, America. Exercise your right to vote.

A Westervin Wedding

A Westervin Wedding: Banners & Bunting

Sarah loves banners and sparkly lights. Sarah also thinks about our wedding a lot. Luckily for her, my mom snapped this picture at a Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. I think it’s pretty obvious that this is how we’ll have to decorate our reception.

blog giveaway: handmade sock garters from SWANclothing

The trend away from cheap, mass-produced commodities seems to manifest itself in all sorts of different ways. From food (think artisinal, organic), to cocktails (classic, non-vodka-based “mixology”), to grooming (double-edged—or straight blade ¡scary!—razors), to clothes (premium jeans with gold rush era details), etc. More and more people seem to be finding that there is something to the simple, high-quality construction of the past. It’s something that is enchanting, timeless, and, importantly, sincere.

Depending on where you live, it may or may not be getting warmer, and you know what that means: spring cleaning. Here at Westervin, we have a few changes in the works (one of which is replacing our laptop’s power cord, which has hampered our blog output with its sparking and smoking):

Rippin' on the Headlines

Rippin’ on the Headlines: Evidence Builds on Color of Dinosaurs

Brian: Hey, Sarah!  Have you heard what they’re sayin’ about dinosaurs?
Sarah: That they’re made from corn, and like sugar, they’re fine in moderation?
Brian: That’s weird.  And no.  Researchers have determined the color of a 150 million year old species of dinosaur!
Sarah:  I guess that makes children’s coloring books obsolete.
Brian:   It appears that dinosaurs, at least the feathered variety, may have a lot in common with chickens.  According to the New York Times,
“The color pattern of Anchiornis is reminiscent of living birds. A breed of chickens called Silver Spangled Hamburgs, for example, has white, black-tipped wing feathers. Dr. Prum speculated that studying these chickens might allow scientists to determine the specific mutations that gave rise to Anchiornis’s plumage.”

Check out the Silver Spangled Hamburg for yourself:

Sarah:  Aaaawesome!  You know what else looks like the Silver Spangled Hamburg?  This stuff!
