“Exciting” doesn’t begin to describe this post. After a five-week dry spell, our famed Westervin giveaways (famed only in my mind, probably) are back in action. I won’t fawn too much over these sterling silver and titanium “Blue Bird Oval Hoop” earrings from tothemetal, because you can see for yourself how well-crafted and downright darling they are. But I simply must insist you read the interview with Marina, who is donating these endearing earrings. She lives in Greece and has talent oozing out of her fingertips! I for one couldn’t wait to read about her inspirations and the backdrop of jewelry studio.

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, there lived a little mobile of paper stars named Vela. Vela was a bright and chipper mobile, and was very proud of her cascading, cotton-candy-colored stars. She would often float happily through her neighborhood, giggling and saying hello to all the other star mobiles. But one day, while bouncing along, she was passed by an interesting bit of space debris — a National Geographic magazine! She quickly and joyously flipped through the July 2006 issue, devouring each page, every image of the land far, far away known as Earth, with irrepressible curiosity. After flipping the last page, Vela’s usually sunny demeanor quickly faded. She gazed at the empty galaxy around her, and wished desperately to explore the exotic planet Earth. Without further hesitation, she resolved to pack up her bags and shoot off on her first grand adventure. After arriving, the first welcoming face she saw belonged to Frances from theStarcraft, who quickly agreed to help Vela find a home. The trend away from cheap, mass-produced commodities seems to manifest itself in all sorts of different ways. From food (think artisinal, organic), to cocktails (classic, non-vodka-based “mixology”), to grooming (double-edged—or straight blade ¡scary!—razors), to clothes (premium jeans with gold rush era details), etc. More and more people seem to be finding that there is something to the simple, high-quality construction of the past. It’s something that is enchanting, timeless, and, importantly, sincere.
