Maker's Remarks

Arlie Trowbridge of Urban Revisions

Oh man. I’m excited. Why? Because I’m about to share my mini interview with Arlie Trowbridge, the stupidly talented woman behind Urban Revisions. I’ve loved her work for ages now! Arlie was sweet enough to answer a few questions — some silly, some serious — for the latest installment of my Maker’s Remarks series. And the timing couldn’t be better, because she’s just released her Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Oh how these sherbet colored pieces make me wanna run outside and chase an ice cream truck!

handmade glass and leather purses by Urban Revisions

How did Urban Revisions start? Did you have a “quit your day job to start an Etsy shop” sort of moment?

Urban Revisions started in early 2009 by accident. I had just started getting into reading fashion blogs and the DIY shredded t-shirt craze was in full effect. I gave it a try and was immediately addicted to the process of “revising” the most basic article of clothing – a tee. My friend started modeling them in “urban” settings around Richmond, and the Etsy shop was born. Shortly after my first couple of sales, I was awarded a fellowship by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Couldn’t have been better timing. This allowed me to “quit my day job” and really pursue selling my work.

Your shredded T-shirts are so unique, and it seems like your beautiful glass jewelry requires a lot of skill to create. What’s the inspiration for your pieces and the process for making them?

There’s no doubt that I love things with an organic feel to them. Almost anything that I’ve ever created and really loved came about by accident… there’s something really special about working with glass and distressed fiber. You can melt and shred forever until something amazing comes about. In the end, everything always has this delicate look but in actuality, cotton and glass have really strong qualities.

Would you say you’re more of an urbanite or a nature-lover? Or a perfect mixture of both?

Both! I’ve lived in or very close to a city the majority of my life. I need to be near the sound of people’s hustle and bustle but I also need our long camping trips in the middle of no where and our afternoons hanging down by the James River.

What’s a typical day in the life of Arlie Trowbridge? Take us through a brief snapshot of your day, from morning to night?

Wake up, stumble to the coffee pot, fill the largest mug available, stumble to the studio and slowly open my eyes over emails and blogs.
Thats the first step, and then it’s either …

a. start shredding
b. start torch working
c. start dyeing
< or >
d. start day dreaming

I’m really all over the place, and it feels awesome.

Would you rather have the ability to breathe underwater or the ability to fly? Explain.

Breathe underwater!!! In fact, this is something I’ve dreamt about many times. I spent many days at our local pool pretending to be Ariel from The Little Mermaid when I was little. Some people have commented on my cluster rings and leaf earrings, saying they remind them of coral. I love that. Marine life is fascinating.

What’s your favorite part of creating & selling your handicrafts?

The people I have had the pleasure to “meet”! The internet is such a powerful tool. Knowing that there are ladies all over the world wearing Urban Revisions is incredible to me.

BTDubs, if you’ve read through this interview, you’ve got a special treat coming. You can enter Arlie’s giveaway on Facebook to win the spectacular glass cluster ring pictured above. Get on over there and enter!

Tangerine Clutch from Mickey’s Girl

The giveaway fun continues today, thanks to Mickey’s Girl! The sweet Sylvia, founder and owner of Mickey’s Girl, is offering one of her hottest sellers — the Tangerine Tango Clutch — to one lucky Westervin reader. Do you love? I can just imagine dancing my cares away on a warm spring night with this eye-catching clutch at my side! Not that I get out much… but a girl can dream!

giveaway: tangerine tango clutch from MickeysGirl.com

Before you enter the giveaway, be sure sure read my mini interview with Sylvia, if not to learn more about this doll, than for a little style inspiration!

Where are you from?

Born and raised in LA.

Tell me a little more about Mickey’s Girl and how you started it.

I constantly get asked, “So, who’s Mickey?” I got inspired by a guy in Europe whom I’ve dubbed “Mickey”. This guy had the utmost style, class, and demeanor, which was noticeable blocks away. He seemed so alluring and mysterious at the same time. I automatically pictured him paired with a babe of a girl who had equal amounts of those same qualities. I took the inspiration of his make-believe girl and applied “her style” to my store.

Sylvia Avanessian

Personally, I’m a bit of a tomboy, but I love sky high heels and lace, so most of my outfits would be rugged with a hint of elegance, which a lot of girls can easily relate to.

To be a Mickey’s Girl, one has to be fashionably fearless, elegantly racy & a role model for her own. Every girl has that inner star within themselves and sometimes you need that little push from “Mickey” to let it shine.

Describe your style in three words or less.

Edgy chic

What was your last halloween costume?

I was a scary werewolf — with the worst set of plastic glow in the dark fangs.

What’s your favorite part about owning your own shop?

The awesome feedback I get when a customer discovers my store.

If you were a planet, which one would you be and why?

Earth- only life form I could feel alive.

Giveaway: Newby Treasury Necklace

Pssst! Have you noticed anything different around here? Say… a new website! Brian’s been working away on Westervin’s new look for many, many weeks, and we’re finally happy to launch the new and improved Westervin.com. Well, it’s still a work in progress–B will continue to make improvements throughout the week–but to help celebrate our soft launch, our dear and talented friend Sarah Newby has donated one of her handmade necklaces from Newby Treasury for our first giveaway of 2012. I’m so excited I could just spit!

blog giveaway: win this handmade necklace from Newby Treasury

Sarah has her own launch to celebrate. This prize, her One Five One Necklace, is now for sale, and her equally talented boyfriend, Ryan Glenn, has created a gorgeous and intriguing video to showcase it!

So Sarah, tell us about the inspiration behind this One Five One Necklace and its video.

I like to think of the necklace representing this metaphor for life by the Venerable Bede. I’m paraphrasing, but as he said it, a sparrow passes from darkness into a warm, well-lit room and immediately out again into the darkness. Life is the brief interior moment, and we are completely ignorant of what is outside.

As for the video, I go through phases where I favor one form of media or another and right now I’m greatly inspired by films. I had been throwing around the idea of making a video for one of the necklaces, but I didn’t have a concept, and when I rewatched Picnic at Hanging Rock a few weeks ago, I knew I wanted to make the video something like that; the colors, the seductive force of nature, and the mystery surrounding the young women are all interesting to me.

What have you been working on since we last saw you? Any other new jewelry designs you’re excited about?

Why, yes! I just released a set of bangles inspired by Robert Altman’s beautiful and mesmerizing 1977 film 3 Women. I saw it recently for the first time, and it has led me to a more nuanced understanding of my own visual language. I identified with it right away.

“Exciting” doesn’t begin to describe this post.  After a five-week dry spell, our famed Westervin giveaways (famed only in my mind, probably) are back in action.  I won’t fawn too much over these sterling silver and titanium “Blue Bird Oval Hoop” earrings from tothemetal, because you can see for yourself how well-crafted and downright darling they are.  But I simply must insist you read the interview with Marina, who is donating these endearing earrings.  She lives in Greece and has talent oozing out of her fingertips!  I for one couldn’t wait to read about her inspirations and the backdrop of jewelry studio.
