Last week’s Millinery class was fun and fruitful, but I’m afraid my freshly blocked hat isn’t quite ready for sharing. Luckily, I have something even better! A chat with one of my favorite contemporary milliners, Behida Dolić. Behida, who has been crafting exquisite hats for close to a decade, was kind enough to answer a few of my questions for our second Maker’s Remarks feature. Let’s jump right in, shall we?
Due to some family health problems, our instructor had to cancel our third class last week, but the excitement of this week’s class more than made up for that disappointment. Our first assignment, as I mentioned earlier, was to come up with 10 sketches for potential hat designs. We then discussed our inspirations and intentions, and wouldn’t you know it, I had to adjust my plans a bit. My goals were a bit lofty for a beginner. Surprise. With Mrs. Campisano’s expertise, however, I found a design that I think will work quite nicely.
As you’ve probably heard, I’m taking a hat-making class (!), which meets once a week through May. One of the perks of working full time at a college is that you get to take undergraduate courses for free. It only took me a year to start taking advantage, but boy howdy did I pick a good one! Unfortunately, our second class was canceled this week due to the blizzaster of 2011, so I haven’t started my first hat yet. I do, however, have plenty of introductory info and hat inspirations to share until next week!
