The photography of Leilani Wertens is nothing short of breathtaking. She ventures into estate sales, not in search of vintage deals, but to capture the past, the silent stories that lie in the homes and possessions of people passed. At first, as an avid thrifter, I was drawn simply to the vintage decor and the thought of finding such amazing retro loot on the cheap! But then I was seized by the stillness of the discarded items and abandoned spaces. It’s calming, yet the mystery of each moment is gripping. I could stare and wonder for hours.

On a recent project, I was hoping to incorporate some elements of vintage advertising from the 1920s and 1940s. Sarah and I were hoping to update the look and exaggerate the colors – perhaps using a 1950s or even 1960s color palette.
Coincidentally, Jessica Hische, creator of the Daily Drop Cap, just relaunched her personal website, which showcases her type, design, and illustration. It turns out that Jessica seems to enjoy updating vintage designs as well. Check some out: here, here, and here.
